"Without our territory, without Indigenous Peoples, it is very difficult to talk about biodiversity."
Today, our partner Organización Nacional de los Pueblos Indígenas de la Amazonia Colombiana (OPIAC), and the Colombia Ministry of Environment, Susana Muhamad, opened the "International Meeting of Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Basin on the road to COP16". This event is a historic opportunity for the voices of Indigenous Peoples to be heard in the defense of their territories.
🗣 "It is important to highlight this system of knowledge, this indigenous science to maintain the balance of nature, to keep it conserved and preserved. Today we play an important role to continue saving lives when we talk about climate change and biodiversity. It is important to be able to value these Indigenous Peoples who in one way or another, I repeat, save lives [when] we talk about biodiversity." - Oswaldo Muca, OPIAC's General Coordinator.
🗣"One of the most important points of discussion that will take place in the international negotiations will be precisely the approval of the Work Plan of Article 8J for Indigenous Peoples, communities, and local communities. In this perspective, it is very important for Colombia as host country, but also in the COP presidency, to generate and contribute to ensure that there will be adequate guarantees, not only for meetings and political discussions, but also for the recognition of the contribution made by the world's indigenous peoples to the care of biological diversity, not because they are the caretakers who are doing it as a rule, but because their knowledge systems, their ways of life and their cultural processes have led to a harmonious relationship between nature and human civilization. This is deeply at the root of what humanity needs in this climate transition, which is precisely what the COP16 in Colombia is calling for, to make peace with nature, which implies a change in the way we live concerning nature." - Susana Muhamad, Colombia Ministry of Environment.
