{"id":3091,"date":"2021-11-25T11:57:20","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T11:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/?p=3091"},"modified":"2021-11-25T11:57:29","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T11:57:29","slug":"how-satellite-imagery-can-support-clean-water-for-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/uncategorized\/how-satellite-imagery-can-support-clean-water-for-all\/","title":{"rendered":"How Satellite Imagery Can Support Clean Water for All"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/sdg.iisd.org\/news\/how-satellite-imagery-can-support-clean-water-for-all\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=SDG%20Update%20-%2025%20November%202021&amp;utm_content=SDG%20Update%20-%2025%20November%202021+CID_0d88da67150861a292d0a4b520a2f59c&amp;utm_source=cm&amp;utm_term=Read\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/sdg.iisd.org\/news\/how-satellite-imagery-can-support-clean-water-for-all\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=SDG%20Update%20-%2025%20November%202021&amp;utm_content=SDG%20Update%20-%2025%20November%202021+CID_0d88da67150861a292d0a4b520a2f59c&amp;utm_source=cm&amp;utm_term=Read\">Source >>><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"323\" src=\"http:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-1024x323.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-1024x323.png 1024w, https:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-300x95.png 300w, https:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image-768x242.png 768w, https:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/image.png 1367w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean water and sanitation for all by 2030 will require a major course correction according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sdg.iisd.org\/news\/sdg-6-acceleration-efforts-underway-as-data-shows-targets-off-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies<\/a>&nbsp;that indicate the world is far off-track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To provide a detailed picture, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwater.org\/publications\/summary-progress-update-2021-sdg-6-water-and-sanitation-for-all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SDG6 Progress Report<\/a>&nbsp;by UN-Water Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6 (IMI-SDG6) reports 2 billion people globally still lack access to safely managed drinking water and 3.6 billion people, or roughly 46% of the world\u2019s population, are without access to safely managed sanitation services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Determining the geography of water\u2019s availability will play a key factor in ensuring water and sanitation is available for all by 2030. The \u201cfor all\u201d caveat involves touching the most remote communities that may be missed or \u201cinvisible\u201d on official population maps, which disadvantages communities from receiving the consideration and benefits of many policy initiatives. Therefore, monitoring and planning approaches in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector are critical towards securing availability and sustainably managed water for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World Vision is addressing this issue with the application of evolving technologies, specifically, high resolution population maps to better monitor progress and understand the geography of \u201cwater for all.\u201d To ensure no one is left behind in terms of access to safe water, their team is working to fill relevant data gaps with the use of machine learning; high resolution satellite imagery; and geographic information systems. Focusing on Rwanda and Zambia, the three sources of high-resolution population data are visualized in maps that feature building locations, estimations of populations, development indicators, population distribution, topography, land cover, and other statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve their goals, World Vision engaged in several&nbsp;external collaborations. Fruitful partnerships with governments helped draw attention to the degree to which communities could exploit water supply facilities and the levels of water service coverage levels in a particular area. Even the use of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OpenStreetMap<\/a>&nbsp;enabled the World Vision team to employ volunteers to physically map locations, essentially guaranteeing an exceptional level of detail in the maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Gasaka and Kamegeri, Rwanda, their work revealed about 60% of the population lived within the government\u2019s prescribed distance of a water collection point. This data indirectly highlighted other groups without access and prompted further investigation and correction. In Zambia, their work also highlighted the population density around a water supply point, showing 77% of the population lived beyond the prescribed distance to an improved water point.
