{"id":709,"date":"2020-10-01T06:05:27","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T06:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/?p=709"},"modified":"2020-10-01T06:05:34","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T06:05:34","slug":"us-bans-imports-from-malaysias-palm-oil-company-fgv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eos.co.id\/main\/uncategorized\/us-bans-imports-from-malaysias-palm-oil-company-fgv\/","title":{"rendered":"US bans imports from Malaysia\u2019s palm oil company FGV"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Wednesday, 30 Sep 2020 10:36 PM MYT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/media2.malaymail.com\/uploads\/articles\/2019\/2019-10\/fgv_logo_0910_(2).jpg\" alt=\"FGV, the world\u2019s largest crude palm oil producer, and some other suppliers of the oil used in everything from food to cosmetics to biodiesel have long faced allegations from rights groups over labour and human rights abuses. \u2014 Picture by Choo Choy May\" title=\"FGV, the world\u2019s largest crude palm oil producer, and some other suppliers of the oil used in everything from food to cosmetics to biodiesel have long faced allegations from rights groups over labour and human rights abuses. \u2014 Picture by Choo Choy May\"\/><figcaption>FGV, the world\u2019s largest crude palm oil producer, and some other suppliers of the oil used in everything from food to cosmetics to biodiesel have long faced allegations from rights groups over labour and human rights abuses. \u2014 Picture by Choo Choy May<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, Sept 30 \u2014 The United States has banned imports of palm oil from Malaysian company FGV Holdings following an investigation into allegations it uses forced labour, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency said today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FGV, the world\u2019s largest crude palm oil producer, and some other suppliers of the oil used in everything from food to cosmetics to biodiesel have long faced allegations from rights groups over labour and human rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe width=\"1\" height=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FGV did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US agency said the ban was the result of a year-long investigation that revealed signs of forced labour such as abuse of the vulnerable, deception, physical and sexual violence, intimidation and threats, and retention of identity documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe width=\"728\" height=\"280\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation also raised concerns that forced child labour was potentially being used in FGV\u2019s production processes, CBP said in a statement, adding that the ban would come into effect immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe width=\"1\" height=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe use of forced labour in the production of such a ubiquitous product allows companies to profit from the abuse of vulnerable workers,\u201d said Brenda Smith, Executive Assistant Commissioner of CBP\u2019s trade office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesia and Malaysia are the two biggest producers of palm oil and the industry has also been blamed for deforestation and the destruction of natural habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith said CBP had received allegations around the broader palm oil industry and asked US importers to look into the labour practices of their suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t be more specific at this point but I would suggest that US importers doing business with palm oil producers take a look at their supply chain and ask a lot of questions around the labour practices,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US consumer goods giant Procter &amp; Gamble, which has a joint venture with FGV, should take the ban \u201cseriously\u201d if it is an importer of its palm oil products, Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Procter &amp; Gamble did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CBP ban comes after rights groups called on US authorities last year to investigate FGV over concerns about forced labour and human trafficking on its plantations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 84 per cent of palm plantation workers in Malaysia, or some 337,000 workers, are migrants from countries including Indonesia, India and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anti-trafficking group Liberty Shared submitted a petition to CBP in April against another Malaysian palm oil producer, Sime Darby Plantation, over alleged labour abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said in July it had asked the rights group for more information and that it would swiftly address any breaches following a thorough investigation. \u2014 Reuters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2020\/09\/30\/us-bans-imports-from-malaysias-palm-oil-company-fgv\/1908233\">https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2020\/09\/30\/us-bans-imports-from-malaysias-palm-oil-company-fgv\/1908233<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday, 30 Sep 2020 10:36 PM MYT WASHINGTON, Sept 30 \u2014 The United States has &hellip;
