The Pulitzer Center is seeking a professional based in one of the tropical rainforest regions to extend its environmental reporting initiatives with educational programming.
The Pulitzer Center is looking for a professional with experience in environmental issues and project management to lead its new program of outreach and education on rainforest-related issues. The Pulitzer Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting high-quality journalism and creating awareness of underreported stories.
The Pulitzer Center has a well-established program of educational outreach and engagement in the United States, reaching hundreds of K-12 schools and universities with an innovative mix of online curricular materials, professional development workshops, and other opportunities for teachers and students. We now seek to expand that work internationally, with a specific focus on the rainforest regions.
The rainforest outreach and education program connects two main Pulitzer Center initiatives on the rainforest regions. Since 2018, the Rainforest Journalism Fund (RJF) has supported hundreds of journalists to cover urgent issues in the Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia. In 2020, a complementary initiative was announced: the Rainforest Investigations Network, which fosters journalistic collaborations among Fellows coming from 10 different countries.
Both initiatives are supported by the Norwegian International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI).
The RJF and its sister initiative, RIN, are together helping journalists to produce in-depth quality content about the rainforest regions. Environmental crime, threats faced by the Indigenous peoples, and the investigation of supply chains are some of the topics that grantees and Fellows are pursuing. These initiatives extend opportunities for capacity building and knowledge exchange for journalists.
Through a new initiative, the Pulitzer Center aims to use the reporting produced through RJF and RIN, as well as the expertise of grantees and Fellows, as the basis for outreach and education activities on related issues across the Amazon, greater Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia.
Responsibilities
The goal of the rainforest outreach and education program is to leverage RIN and RJF reporting and community for education and outreach mainly in rainforest regions, but also with partners in the U.S. and Europe.
The main responsibilities of the manager include researching and designing effective and culturally appropriate education and outreach programs inspired by the Pulitzer Center model. The manager will also need to develop and oversee the evaluation of education and outreach activities from this initiative. Programs and activities may include:
- Curriculum design and development for classrooms around the world
- Facilitating connections or visits between journalists and classrooms (with students or educators)
- Development of partnerships with universities to bring journalism and journalists to new academic fora and discussions
The education/outreach programming overseen by this manager aims to highlight the role of investigative journalism and science reporting in uncovering and analyzing the drivers, consequences, and potential solutions for underreported issues facing rainforest regions.
The manager will work with the Pulitzer Center outreach team, helping to create and expand partnerships with universities, develop symposiums, and organize public events on the key issues driving the destruction of the rainforests. The manager also will work closely with the editorial teams of both rainforest initiatives and in direct contact with the education team at the Pulitzer Center.
The manager will be responsible for leading the hiring processes of local outreach coordinators in countries of the Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia. Along with these professionals, the manager will plan and implement training opportunities, while overseeing local partnerships.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- At least five years of experience working with nonprofit organizations and/or initiatives intersecting with education and/or civic engagement, especially in program management or implementation. Experience with monitoring and evaluation is a plus.
- Experience in at least one of the rainforest regions (Amazon, greater Congo Basin, Southeast Asia)
- The ability to act as an adviser and coach, for regional coordinators and journalists, and to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams
- Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks without compromising quality
- The ability to think of strategic and proactive solutions to challenges and opportunities and have the drive to innovate
- The ability to work independently and to have an open and collaborative management style, characteristic of a team player
- Fluent in oral and written English. Proficiency with languages common in the rainforest regions of the world would be helpful and should be noted in the application.
Preferred Qualifications
- College degree
- Ability and flexibility to work across time zones and willingness to travel (when COVID-19 restrictions and risks are minimized)
- Familiarity with the scientific, environmental, social, legal, political, and commercial forces at play in deforestation and climate change
